Hiking into the Mist

Family

Yesterday we met friends Tim and Vickie at Newfound Gap. They began hiking the Appalachian Trail at Springer Mountain in Georgia on March 15th and plan to through hike to Mt Katahdin, Maine. We lunched with them at a restaurant in Cherokee then took them to a laundromat (since our laundry equipment is disconnected). Then we brought them back to our house for hot showers, dinner on the deck, and a night’s rest in a real bed. This morning we took them back to Newfound Gap in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. The temperature was chill, the wind brisk, and the fog like pea soup. What’s worse, the weather forecast calls for snow over the next couple of days. What an adventure!

Imperial War Museum

Imperial War Museum

London’s Imperial War Museum in Southwark founded even as the First World War raged offers insights into the myriad costs of the wars of the 20th and 21st Centuries. It was a most disquieting but valuable reminder of the myriad costs of war.

London’s Canals

London’s Canals

The two of us have long been fascinated with the history of canals and their role in the history of transportation, industrialization, and more recently recreation. This stay in London has given us new opportunities to explore and learn more about how canals contributed to the growth of this great city and how they are being used and preserved today.

National Portrait Gallery

National Portrait Gallery

It was a most educational visit to the newly renovated National Portrait Gallery at Trafalgar Square in Central London. We were intrigued with the contemporary approach to presenting British History.
