While we are in Boston we have two major methods of working on genealogy. We can go to some of the excellent libraries nearby or we can use Greg and Rachel’s excellent bandwidth and work online. We have been debating on whether to make the drive to Waltham and do some research on family military history at the National Archives. Instead we took advantage of an offer to join Fold3 online. Among other things we have found a court document from 194 years ago certifying that Karen’s ancestor Alexander Oliver fought in the Revolutionary War. It’s so amazing to be able to do that while sitting on the sofa in the living room!
Imperial War Museum
London’s Imperial War Museum in Southwark founded even as the First World War raged offers insights into the myriad costs of the wars of the 20th and 21st Centuries. It was a most disquieting but valuable reminder of the myriad costs of war.
There is a trap in genealogy called
“The names’s the same” and I fell into that trap. This is a different Alexander Oliver. Oops! Got to look for the one who moved to Ohio after The War.
