Leaving the Sunshine Behind

Florida, Road Trip, States

We started the day in Melbourne in shorts weather. We broke camp, hooked up the Silver Shadow, climbed into the Trailblazer and turned on the air conditioning. We continued our journey up US-1 and A1A stopping for one more look and the sand and the surf in Flagler Beach. It was a trip down memory lane too since it evoked many memories of our years in Volusia County when the kids were young. To emphasize the joy of the sunshine and surf, we listened to Jimmy Buffett on the iPod. As we neared Jacksonville we saw gray skies ahead. Once we had Florida in our rearview mirror we were driving in misty rain. When we stopped for gas we were blasted with cold air as we stepped from the car. When we stopped for the night in Fort Mills SC, we set up camp in freezing rain. It was all we could do to not turn ourselves around and head back to the sunshine.

Six Lives: The Stories of Henry VIII’s Queens

London’s National Portrait Gallery’s temporary exhibition, “Six Lives: The Stories of Henry VIII’s Queens” presents an amazing collection of portraits, jewelry, personal effects, books, costumes, and more to illustrate not only the lives of the six women who married the second Tudor king, but the effort across five centuries to keep their memory alive.

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

The purpose of our trek to Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham in the southwest of London was to see a recently recovered bronze bust of the Emperor Caligula but we discovered so much more in the recently restored 18th Century “little Gothic castle” built by Horace Walpole.
