Melbourne and the Beach

Florida, Road Trip, States

We woke up to another glorious Florida winter day. Temperature perfect. Skies blue. We chose to just hang out in the campground all morning. Brought the arm chairs out into the shade of the trees and read our books. Then at midday we climbed into the car rolled down the windows, opened the sun roof, and headed out looking for adventure. We drove north to Titusville then east to Canaveral National Seashore. We could see the Cape Kennedy Vehicle Assembly Building in the distance and lots of birds in the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge but we headed to the beach. We spent a fabulous hour not only enjoying the surf, the sand, and especially the sunshine, but remembering when nearby New Smyrna Beach was our go-to beach way back when and thinking about a time before development when all of Florida’s beaches were pristine like this.

Six Lives: The Stories of Henry VIII’s Queens

London’s National Portrait Gallery’s temporary exhibition, “Six Lives: The Stories of Henry VIII’s Queens” presents an amazing collection of portraits, jewelry, personal effects, books, costumes, and more to illustrate not only the lives of the six women who married the second Tudor king, but the effort across five centuries to keep their memory alive.

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

The purpose of our trek to Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham in the southwest of London was to see a recently recovered bronze bust of the Emperor Caligula but we discovered so much more in the recently restored 18th Century “little Gothic castle” built by Horace Walpole.
