From Taughannock Falls we headed southwest, technically out of the Finger Lakes region, to Corning and the Corning Museum of Glass. We’d been warned to get there early but not warned that we needed separate tickets in order to make our own glass creation. Studio time will have to wait until the next visit… But we did get to watch a number of cool demonstrations and learn more about the composition of different kinds of glass for different applications. It’s rather a magical material when you consider all the amazing things we can accomplish with it. By midday we were headed northeast through gorgeous countryside. We arrived at the Oneida Community Mansion late in the afternoon, after the last tour had begun. It was pretty cool walking in the footsteps of members of one of the utopian communities of the mid-Nineteenth Century. We’d learned about this stuff in American History with Lee Irby at USF and now we’re where it happened. It was interesting to ponder the forces that helped to create this community and other forces that helped to destroy it. From there we continued on east to Herkimer and a KOA with laundry facilities for the night.
Imperial War Museum
London’s Imperial War Museum in Southwark founded even as the First World War raged offers insights into the myriad costs of the wars of the 20th and 21st Centuries. It was a most disquieting but valuable reminder of the myriad costs of war.
