We planned to be out of the campground by nine-thirty but that didn’t happen. We had morning visits but neighbors we had chatted with last night and yet another tour of the T@B. Got some tips on places to visit along our possible route. We did get on the road by eleven. Our first stop was the Jello-O Gallery in Leroy NY. We had never known there was a Jell-O Museum. In fact we hadn’t even wondered who invented Jell-O or when or where but here are the answers and it was fun. We enjoyed the video tape of the old Jell-O commercials especially the Bill Cosby ads. What a trip back in time. Downstairs was a transportation museum and a little display of other Leroy industries including proprietary medicines. Then lunch, Deviled Ham sandwiches in the car as we headed east on US-20. On to Canandaigua. Until yesterday hadn’t even known it existed. It’s at the upper end of Lake Canandaigua and looks like it’s been a tourist center for a long time. Found the New York Culinary and Wine Center but couldn’t find parking for an RV. Instead found a nearby KOA. Headed back into town and straight to the New York Wine & Culinary Center. We decided the best place there was the Upstairs Bistro where we dined on innovative snacks while gazing out over Lake Canandaigua. The food and some good local brews promoted a wonderful mellow feeling. Afterwards we strolled along the lakeshore. It was a glorious late summer afternoon in the Finger Lakes region of New York. The local church was putting on their summer festival and we enjoyed walking the streets looking at some of the glorious houses lining the streets.
Burgh House Hampstead
Off the beaten path is Hampstead is the more than three hundred year old Burgh House with a fascinating history. It’s now a community center, local museum, gallery, concert venue, event space, and more open to the public four days a week. We popped over for a bite to eat and to peruse the galleries to learn a little more about Hampstead history.
