It was a night of hard rain and we stayed wonderfully dry inside our little turtle shell. Sunday morning. We drove into Harrisonburg then headed north on Lee Highway. Stopped at Southern Kitchen for their signature fried chicken. Oh wow! We both had forgotten how wonderful fried chicken can taste. Then on full tummies we found The Virginia Museum of the Civil War. It is part of Virginia Military Institute and is wonderfully done. The film “Field of Lost Shoes” does a great job of telling the tale of the VMI Cadets who participated in the battle especially the ten who lost their lives. The grounds preserve a portion of the battlefield much like it was on that rainy Sunday in May 1864 including the farmhouse around which the cadets charged. We can never go to a place like this without learning something new. And today we were reminded of ancestors on both sides who fought in that war. We learned more of the responsibilities of the artillery Number 3 man. And we couldn’t help but think of another underage soldier who fought for Missouri from shortly after Fort Sumter until after Appomattox Court House.
