Old Timey Stuff

Family

Okay, so there is at least one advantage to ending our ramble earlier than planned and being at home at the end of September. We got to go to the 39th Annual Mountain Heritage Day. It’s a long standing tradition on the campus of Western Carolina University. There are folks demonstrating some of the old arts. We watched Susan at the loom and Skip working with woodworking hand tools. We chatted with people involved in metalworking. There was a story teller and a demonstration of logging skills. We came away with an September 27, 1862 copy of Harper’s Weekly that has special significance for us. Another find was a weasel. Yes, it goes Pop! It’s used to measure and wind yarn. We filled our bellies with yummy barbecue and smoked turkey and filled our ears with stories from the genealogist of the local chapter of Sons of the American Revolution. Then shortly after we got home we had a visit from Sam, a rare event these days.

It was a fun way to spend a sunshiny day.

Over a long weekend we sampled some of the myriad things to do in Cuyahoga Valley National Park, unique among national parks for it’s environmental reclamation, historic preservation, and recreational opportunities adjacent to the populous cities of Cleveland and Akron in northeastern Ohio. Can’t wait to return and explore more.

Slow Journey Home

Slow Journey Home

Our journey from Portsmouth, England to our home in Ohio might have been accomplished in about sixteen hours but my avoiding air travel we were able to enjoy a fifteen day journey home via train, ship, Uber, train, as well as our own feet and finally our personal vehicle.

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard

It’s been a fascinating two day visit to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. We managed to pack in tours of the HMS Warrior, the HMS Victory as well ast Victory Live: The
Big Repair, and finally the Mary Rose. All were incredibly informative and well presented.
