Fiber, Friends, Food, and Fun

Family

This group started out three years ago as a small gathering of people with an interest in fiber crafts particularly spinning. The first gathering was on a third Sunday at Allen and Joyce’s. As Joyce, Sherri, Wendy, and Karen gathered in Joyce’s studio for a session of spinning, hand sewing, and getting to know you conversation while Steve and Allen began IMG_7021a getting to know you conversation downstairs. We concluded that day with tour of the sheep pasture and potluck dinner. That has become our pattern. We shoot for every Third Sunday. We refer to ourselves as The Sunday Spinners. Others sometimes join us but we six seem to comprise the core of the group. It always involves conversation and a community dinner. Spinning or knitting is usually a part of it. Fiber arts and other handcrafts are important to all of us. We tend now to all hang together whether in a studio or living room or outdoor deck. The friendships are strong. The conversation engaging. The mutual support is wonderful. Today we gathered in the living room. There was knitting, spinning, and chair caning going on as we talked and commiserated and supported one another. The dinner was delicious and was wonderfully capped by homemade pie from homegrown pumpkins topped with just-whipped cream and lots of laughter as we answered our own burning questions with the help of a set of Sock Monkey tarot cards!

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

The purpose of our trek to Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham in the southwest of London was to see a recently recovered bronze bust of the Emperor Caligula but we discovered so much more in the recently restored 18th Century “little Gothic castle” built by Horace Walpole.

Imperial War Museum

Imperial War Museum

London’s Imperial War Museum in Southwark founded even as the First World War raged offers insights into the myriad costs of the wars of the 20th and 21st Centuries. It was a most disquieting but valuable reminder of the myriad costs of war.

London’s Canals

London’s Canals

The two of us have long been fascinated with the history of canals and their role in the history of transportation, industrialization, and more recently recreation. This stay in London has given us new opportunities to explore and learn more about how canals contributed to the growth of this great city and how they are being used and preserved today.
