IMG_6984We went on a field trip with our friends Mary and Steve. Over a glass of wine recently we started hatching plans for a fun day and since none of us had ever visited the Carl Sandburg Home near Hendersonville we chose that as our starting point. Entering the unpretentious home of this fascinating family was to step back into 1967 and into the lives of Sandburg, his wife, daughters, and granddaughters. It was fascinating and all four of us want to go back there again. Next stop was Hannah Flannagan’s for Irish pub fare for lunch and the McFarlan Bakery for dessert and coffee. Yum! Then on to Burnt Shirt Winery and a tour of the facility guided by the wine maker himself followed by a wine tasting. Every trip to the Asheville area must involve a stop by Earth Fare which yielded us a few pints of Graeter’s Ice Cream and as we neared home we stopped by Barber Orchard to pick up a few apples! An educational, fun, fruitful day!

Imperial War Museum

Imperial War Museum

London’s Imperial War Museum in Southwark founded even as the First World War raged offers insights into the myriad costs of the wars of the 20th and 21st Centuries. It was a most disquieting but valuable reminder of the myriad costs of war.

London’s Canals

London’s Canals

The two of us have long been fascinated with the history of canals and their role in the history of transportation, industrialization, and more recently recreation. This stay in London has given us new opportunities to explore and learn more about how canals contributed to the growth of this great city and how they are being used and preserved today.

National Portrait Gallery

National Portrait Gallery

It was a most educational visit to the newly renovated National Portrait Gallery at Trafalgar Square in Central London. We were intrigued with the contemporary approach to presenting British History.
