This section of The Oregon Trail was also a part of The California Trail as early as 1841, as well as The Mormon Trail beginning in 1846, and The Pony Express in 1860-1861. When The Mormons left Nauvoo IL, Karen’s GG-Grandfather chose to return east and settled in northern KY where he married Karen’s GG-Grandmother and had two more children. But his second wife Charity and some of his older children by his first wife chose to travel west with Brigham Young along the Mormon Trail to the Salt Lake Valley in Utah. She would have traveled here past Register Cliff. Perhaps she or part of her party inscribed her name here. And she may well have slept at this location more than 160 years ago! But besides pondering the probable family connection, we were just amazed to have the opportunity to stand in the ruts worn into the stone by so many intrepid travelers in the Nineteenth Century. Wow!

This stay in London has given us new opportunities to explore and learn more about how canals contributed to the growth of this great city and how they are being used and preserved today.

It was a most educational visit to the newly renovated National Portrait Gallery at Trafalgar Square in Central London. We were intrigued with the contemporary approach to presenting British History.
