Icy Conditions

Family

True to the weather forecast, it started snowing late this morning. By mid-afternoon it was turning to sleet. Our uphill neighbor stopped by for a visit about that time and reported road conditions still good except for the ice on the little bridge. After leaving our house she got the car only part way home then abandoned it. About an hour later her husband came home in a little two-wheel drive rental car and parked it down on the paved road, about one mile from their house because it was slipping and sliding on the first hill on the gravel road. We saw them both in foul weather gear with hiking sticks headed up the mountain. The big question now is: Will they be able to get out tomorrow for their long awaited trip to warmer climes? And will we be able to get out Friday for our much anticipated trip to Metairie? We aren’t snowed in like Boston right now but we’ve got some winter weather challenges also.

Imperial War Museum

Imperial War Museum

London’s Imperial War Museum in Southwark founded even as the First World War raged offers insights into the myriad costs of the wars of the 20th and 21st Centuries. It was a most disquieting but valuable reminder of the myriad costs of war.

London’s Canals

London’s Canals

The two of us have long been fascinated with the history of canals and their role in the history of transportation, industrialization, and more recently recreation. This stay in London has given us new opportunities to explore and learn more about how canals contributed to the growth of this great city and how they are being used and preserved today.

National Portrait Gallery

National Portrait Gallery

It was a most educational visit to the newly renovated National Portrait Gallery at Trafalgar Square in Central London. We were intrigued with the contemporary approach to presenting British History.
