To Mast and Back

North Carolina, Road Trip, States

We headed out this morning from our site at the Julian Price Campground. We wanted to explore the area a little. We found a geocache on the way to breakfast in Blowing Rock. We refueled in the outskirts of Boone then headed to Valle Crucis to visit The Original Mast General Store. We often shop at Mast in Waynesville. It’s such a cool story of how the Cooper family saved this historic store and continue to run it and now several more locations as general stores. Each is a little different in what they carry but all have a delightful variety of quality merchandise. This one carries groceries as well as old fashioned candy, gifts, hiking shoes, baseball caps and more. Even better, employees tell us that it is a great organization for which to work. Steve purchased a fresh baseball cap with the Mast logo. We returned to camp the more direct way, via Holloway Mountain Road which is a gravel road most of the way but a much shorter trip.

In the Apollo Victoria Theater in London’s West End we were witness to the incredible prequel to The Wizard of Oz, the story of the Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.

Six Lives: The Stories of Henry VIII’s Queens

London’s National Portrait Gallery’s temporary exhibition, “Six Lives: The Stories of Henry VIII’s Queens” presents an amazing collection of portraits, jewelry, personal effects, books, costumes, and more to illustrate not only the lives of the six women who married the second Tudor king, but the effort across five centuries to keep their memory alive.

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

The purpose of our trek to Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham in the southwest of London was to see a recently recovered bronze bust of the Emperor Caligula but we discovered so much more in the recently restored 18th Century “little Gothic castle” built by Horace Walpole.
