The town of Calumet, originally named Red Jacket, sprang up around the Calumet and Hecla copper mines. Today we explored the area a bit. In an attempt to locate the Visitors Center we got into an amazing conversation with the museum curator who gave us an overview of the history of the mines and the town then directed us to the visitors center located in the former Masonic Lodge building.

There we learned a lot about life in a mining town. The C&H Mine operated from 1866 to 1968 and employed many immigrants from a number of countries. Life in Calumet was truly a cosmopolitan experience in a company town. We topped off our visit with a meal of Fish & Chips followed by a most incredible Chocolate Amaretto Cheesecake at the Michigan House in downtown Calumet.
