From our visit in 2012 we fondly remember Grand Marais as the location of the first gas station west of Muskallonge and a restaurant where we grabbed a meal before hurrying off to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. This time we lingered a little. Now we can tell you that it is home to Woodland Park Campground which boasts a laundry room and is situated between Lake Superior and the First Lutheran Church whose chimes ring every half hour from 8AM to 8:30PM. It’s also home to the Lake Superior Brewing Company restaurant which was out of many many menu items but served a decent Chicken Tenders meals and a nice Pale Ale. They didn’t offer dessert but directed us to the Breakwall Bakery and Cafe where we enjoyed a luscious Cherry Cheesecake and coffee. We must go back sometime to try the Fudge Puddles! On the three block walk back to the T@B we stopped by the gas station/grocery and restocked our larder after locating their geocache! Grand Marais is definitely on our map now. We’ll be back to explore this tiny town more thoroughly!

Six Lives: The Stories of Henry VIII’s Queens

London’s National Portrait Gallery’s temporary exhibition, “Six Lives: The Stories of Henry VIII’s Queens” presents an amazing collection of portraits, jewelry, personal effects, books, costumes, and more to illustrate not only the lives of the six women who married the second Tudor king, but the effort across five centuries to keep their memory alive.

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

The purpose of our trek to Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham in the southwest of London was to see a recently recovered bronze bust of the Emperor Caligula but we discovered so much more in the recently restored 18th Century “little Gothic castle” built by Horace Walpole.
