This house at Spiegel Grove was home for a hundred years to five generations of the Hayes family. Built by his uncle in the 1860’s, Rutherford B. Hayes and his wife Lucy enlarged it considerably in the years following his presidency. Visiting his home and adjacent museum gave us a feel for the man, his background, his family, and his times. It makes it so much easier to remember where he comes in the succession of presidents and his importance in American history!
