We landed here at McLain State Park on the western side of the Keweenaw Peninsula early yesterday afternoon and chose Site 76 just across from the lake. Even before we were set up and registered we were giving tours to a couple of neighbors, Bob & Bob, who gave us some ideas of things to do and places to eat in the area as well as recommending that we extend our reservation. Both of them and their wives return here often because there is so much to see and do. We’re fascinated with this spot and are enjoying tales of how the wind and the water have shaped this land even as recently as last September. The campground road was once the state highway until a storm, or probably several storms took out the land on the other side of the road and in some spots, the road itself!

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

The purpose of our trek to Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham in the southwest of London was to see a recently recovered bronze bust of the Emperor Caligula but we discovered so much more in the recently restored 18th Century “little Gothic castle” built by Horace Walpole.
