After securing Site 23 at Lake Byllesby Park outside of Cannon Falls MN this afternoon we checked some apps to see if there was anything intriguing we’d like to check out in the area. Sure enough, the History Here app directed us to the National Bank Bank in Northfield MN. Actually that space in the Scriver Building is occupied by the Northfield Historical Society. Once there we immersed ourselves in the history of the unsuccessful raid by Jesse James and the other members of the James-Younger Gang. We followed that with a visit to the bakery next door. In fact there has been a bakery in this space since before Jesse James’ visit in 1876. The current owners have been in business there for 66 years!  We also took the opportunity to find a geocache and to buy a few groceries and to walk along the waterfront. And we remembered that two years ago we visited another Northfield, in Vermont!

Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Over a long weekend we sampled some of the myriad things to do in Cuyahoga Valley National Park, unique among national parks for it’s environmental reclamation, historic preservation, and recreational opportunities adjacent to the populous cities of Cleveland and Akron in northeastern Ohio. Can’t wait to return and explore more.

Slow Journey Home

Slow Journey Home

Our journey from Portsmouth, England to our home in Ohio might have been accomplished in about sixteen hours but my avoiding air travel we were able to enjoy a fifteen day journey home via train, ship, Uber, train, as well as our own feet and finally our personal vehicle.

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard

It’s been a fascinating two day visit to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. We managed to pack in tours of the HMS Warrior, the HMS Victory as well ast Victory Live: The
Big Repair, and finally the Mary Rose. All were incredibly informative and well presented.
