If you lived here, you’d have a home where the buffalo roam! Based on archeological evidence that they once lived here American Bison have been reintroduced into Payne’s Prairie along with long-horn cattle and horses descended from stock imported by Spanish settlers. There is a rich diversity of plant and animal life here in a fascinating environment. We explored the visitors center and climbed the observation tower. After all that excitement we treated ourselves to an amazing BBQ meal at Pearl’s Country Store in the Marathon station on US-441. If you are hungry anywhere near here, you owe it to yourself to stop at Pearl’s not just for the tasty smoked meats but for some incredible vegetable dishes!
