A couple things have heightened our interest recently in the 1936 Olympic Gold Medalist Jesse Owens. His 2011 statute at the track stadium named for him is featured in a couple episodes of Aerial Americaand his role in the 1936 Olympics is mentioned in The Boys in the Boatand in Unbroken. We found a geocache at his 1986 Memorial near the entrance to Ohio Stadium on The Ohio State University Campus in Columbus, Ohio then wended our way to the track stadium across the river. We’ve got the movie Race in our iTunes wish list. When we have a good wifi connection we can download and watch the movie.
We learned last night that Karen’s parents had season tickets for the 1949 OSU football season when the Buckeyes won the conference championship and went on to beat the California Golden Bears 17-14 in the Rose Bowl. Their photo album from that year includes several black and white photos of the field taken from inside Ohio Stadium.
A lovely way to spend a Sunday in Hampstead. We visited the historic Fenton House to view lots of lovely collectibles, to listen to and learn about harpsicords, and to tour and linger in the garden before heading off to the historic Spaniard’s Inn for a most delectable Sunday Roast.
A visit to the London Transport Museum in Covent Garden gave us insight into the evolution and role of public transportation in the creation of London as a great metropolitan area.
Bath, England is an amazingly inviting place with deep deep history. One little day trip isn’t anywhere near enough but we did enjoy delving into the history of the Roman Baths, basking in the beauty of Bath Abbey, and topping our visit off with Tea and Bath Buns!
