12:00 AM: Didn’t expect this! We’ve been carefully watching the weather all afternoon knowing a thunderstorm was likely. Then there was a tornado watch and a ranger coming round to let us know where we’d take shelter if a warning were to be issued. But the storms missed us and the warning was lifted before 9PM instead of expiring at 11PM. Now this. We were already in bed when six minutes ago we saw a forecast of likely hail in six minutes. We scurried outside to take down the awning and stow the chairs, tables, and rug. Now we’re hunkered inside the T@B just waiting…

2:00 AM: Yes, we got about six minutes of heavy rain that may or may not have included a little bit of hail. And it rained most of the last two hours. There’s been lightning in the distance. Not a major storm but for some reason we’re both too keyed up to sleep. Seems hailstorms are not uncommon around here.

08:00 AM: Fortunately we never had a major storm. And it’s delightfully cool and clear. Good morning!

Imperial War Museum

Imperial War Museum

London’s Imperial War Museum in Southwark founded even as the First World War raged offers insights into the myriad costs of the wars of the 20th and 21st Centuries. It was a most disquieting but valuable reminder of the myriad costs of war.

London’s Canals

London’s Canals

The two of us have long been fascinated with the history of canals and their role in the history of transportation, industrialization, and more recently recreation. This stay in London has given us new opportunities to explore and learn more about how canals contributed to the growth of this great city and how they are being used and preserved today.

National Portrait Gallery

National Portrait Gallery

It was a most educational visit to the newly renovated National Portrait Gallery at Trafalgar Square in Central London. We were intrigued with the contemporary approach to presenting British History.
