By Way of the Crater

2016 Out West, Oregon, Road Trip

If we had taken the direct route from Florence to Klamath Falls, it would have taken us around five hours but instead we took a scenic route. First stop was Springfield with its fun murals and a yummy lunch at Plank Town Brewing Company.

Later on we just had to make a geocaching stop at the covered bridge in Lowell.

Finally we pulled in to Crater Lake National Park. First stop was a flagman. They are doing major road construction! Lots of traffic. Lots of delays. Brief glimpses of the lake from the truck. Second stop was at the campground. Stand in line. Guy in front of us got the last campsite. No cell reception. Pay phone. The campground in Prospect will hold a site for us. Wrong turn on US-62. Have cell signal again. More phone calls.   Make reservation for the KOA in Klamath Falls. Call the folks back in Prospect to tell them plans are changed. Pull in to Klamath Falls, set up trailer, pitch tent, and prepare dinner in cold fierce wind. Thank our lucky stars we didn’t get to camp this night at 6600 foot elevation with no heat at Crater. Eat a simple supper indoors. Realize not only did we not get to sit on the terrace of the lodge at Rim Village and sip coffee, one of the goals of this trip for Lou, we didn’t even stop at a lookout to take a photo of Crater Lake.

P.S. Ask Lou about her uninvited guest this evening!

Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Over a long weekend we sampled some of the myriad things to do in Cuyahoga Valley National Park, unique among national parks for it’s environmental reclamation, historic preservation, and recreational opportunities adjacent to the populous cities of Cleveland and Akron in northeastern Ohio. Can’t wait to return and explore more.

Slow Journey Home

Slow Journey Home

Our journey from Portsmouth, England to our home in Ohio might have been accomplished in about sixteen hours but my avoiding air travel we were able to enjoy a fifteen day journey home via train, ship, Uber, train, as well as our own feet and finally our personal vehicle.

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard

It’s been a fascinating two day visit to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. We managed to pack in tours of the HMS Warrior, the HMS Victory as well ast Victory Live: The
Big Repair, and finally the Mary Rose. All were incredibly informative and well presented.
