Sea Lion Caves

2016 Out West, Oregon, Road Trip

We learned about Sea Lion Caves from our camp host. What a treasure! In 1880 a local seaman discovered this amazing cave frequented during the fall and winter by Steller Sea Lions. He purchased the property soon after for the purpose of protecting these creatures. The protection mission continues to this day though since 1932 the area has been open to the public, complete with gift shop and fudge. It’s an amazing place of natural history. This time of year the sea lions are out in the Pacific, no need to be sheltering in the cave in this warm weather. We did see one that Steve spotted from the overlook. As we were standing next to the full sized statue of a family of Stellers the wind up top nearly knocked us off our feet. Down in the cave we were able to gaze out into the cave, learn more about the sea lions and their habits, and climb up to a lookout and view the Heceta Head Lighthouse in the distance, just as James, the campground host had promised!

What’s cool here is that the wild animals are (or would be) on the outside, free to come and go, and the humans are behind the fencing, on the inside!

This is what we might see if we’re here during the winter!

Winter Magic in Medina

Winter Magic in Medina

By deliberate choice we were in Medina for all the winter holiday festivities from Candlelight Walk in the days before Thanksgiving through A Christmas Carol and A Celtic Christmas as well as an Alex Bevan Concert and a historic house tour all the way through Medina’s 31st Ice Festival but perhaps the highlight was the town hosting hundreds of folks whose homes and lives were devasted by Hurricane Helene at the A Promise of Christmas Event the middle of January. It’s an honor to be a part of this amazing community!

Savoy at Sea 2025

The warmth we anticipated when we headed to the Caribbean in mid-January didn’t really materialize but the fun we had with our dancing friends and the great crew of the Margaritaville at Sea Islander more than made up for the not so favorable weather.
