Feeling refreshed we continued our journey of understanding the young Lincoln at Knob Creek Farm. This was the location of Abe’s first memories, when his father was fighting a legal battle to reclaim Sinking Creek Farm, where Thomas and Nancy took a bold stand against slavery, and where young Austin Gollagher rescued his friend Abe from certain death in a swollen creek. Inside the Gollagher cabin which stands where the Lincoln cabin existed in the 1810s we had a fascinating discussion with a ranger well versed in Lincoln and his background. Then we walked around the Lincoln Inn, a historic structure built to provide hospitality to tourists paying homage to our 16th President, and paused for a while looking out at the field where Abe remembered helping his father plant corn and pumpkins. Abraham Lincoln Birthplace NHP has endeavored to maintain the view as Lincoln knew it in his early years.
