Skyline Hits the Spot

2017 New England, Ohio, Road Trip

Just what we needed, when and where we needed it. The Skyline Chili Parlor on Delhi Pike not only promised a tasty and quick comfort food meal but delivered. With friendly service to boot. We love the Three Way Chili, spaghetti topped with a Mediterranean spiced meat sauce and topped with generous amounts of grated cheddar cheese. Add onions or beans to make it Four Way or onions and beans for Five Way. The history of Cincinnati chili dates back to the 1920’s and a hot dog stand next to the Empress Theater. Skyline hit the scene in Price Hill overlooking the skyline of downtown Cincinnati in 1949 and Gold Star in 1965. It’s not a Tex-Mex chili, the flavors are much more subtle. Look for hints of cinnamon and chocolate. Think of it not so much as a chili but as a delicate Mediterranean stew that is firmly entrenched in the fabric of the Cincinnati food scene. And by the way, the name of the road, and this community on the outskirts of Cinti is pronounced Dell-hi, not Dell-ee, the way Apple Maps says it!

Six Lives: The Stories of Henry VIII’s Queens

London’s National Portrait Gallery’s temporary exhibition, “Six Lives: The Stories of Henry VIII’s Queens” presents an amazing collection of portraits, jewelry, personal effects, books, costumes, and more to illustrate not only the lives of the six women who married the second Tudor king, but the effort across five centuries to keep their memory alive.

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

The purpose of our trek to Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham in the southwest of London was to see a recently recovered bronze bust of the Emperor Caligula but we discovered so much more in the recently restored 18th Century “little Gothic castle” built by Horace Walpole.
