Lower Town Harper’s Ferry is incredibly rich in history. Many of us know that it’s where John Brown took a stand in the years leading up to the Civil War but not so much of the rest of the incredibly rich history of this place. Since the time George Washington identified this locale at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers as an ideal spot to establish the US Armory, Harper’s Ferry has played a significant role in the Industrial Revolution and US history. At two o’clock we joined several other visitors to hear Ranger David Fox talk in depth about the 1859 John Brown Raid. His presentation was a powerful reminder of the need to understand the bigger historical picture, something that many people today could benefit from hearing. Perhaps the park service may see fit to publish a video of the talk on their website! We plan on suggesting it.

Imperial War Museum

London’s Imperial War Museum in Southwark founded even as the First World War raged offers insights into the myriad costs of the wars of the 20th and 21st Centuries. It was a most disquieting but valuable reminder of the myriad costs of war.

London’s Canals

London’s Canals

The two of us have long been fascinated with the history of canals and their role in the history of transportation, industrialization, and more recently recreation. This stay in London has given us new opportunities to explore and learn more about how canals contributed to the growth of this great city and how they are being used and preserved today.

National Portrait Gallery

National Portrait Gallery

It was a most educational visit to the newly renovated National Portrait Gallery at Trafalgar Square in Central London. We were intrigued with the contemporary approach to presenting British History.
