Back to the Smokies

2017 New England, Road Trip

Plans change. We thought we would drive the entire Skyline Drive/Blue Ridge Parkway but instead we’re headed to the house to drop the trailer tonight and catch an early morning flight to Texas to be with family. Back in 1975 the two of us planned to drive the entire Skyline/Blue Ridge and stopped early when we realized we wouldn’t have enough time to do it justice. Here’s to hoping our third attempt, hopefully in the relatively near future, will be successful. For now though our Summer Ramble is on hold.

Six Lives: The Stories of Henry VIII’s Queens

London’s National Portrait Gallery’s temporary exhibition, “Six Lives: The Stories of Henry VIII’s Queens” presents an amazing collection of portraits, jewelry, personal effects, books, costumes, and more to illustrate not only the lives of the six women who married the second Tudor king, but the effort across five centuries to keep their memory alive.

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

The purpose of our trek to Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham in the southwest of London was to see a recently recovered bronze bust of the Emperor Caligula but we discovered so much more in the recently restored 18th Century “little Gothic castle” built by Horace Walpole.
