What started out as a hike to Lewis Falls turned into a celebration of our Appalachian Trail experiences. Fifty years ago this summer Karen backpacked a week long AT trip in The Smokies with her Dad and a brother and sister. Just as we and Steve’s friend Stan commemorated their 1966 hike last summer. The two of us decided this would be an anniversary hike. Then as we paused to drink in the view at Blackrock Overlook, Karen’s sister called! It seemed poetic! All in all it was a good hike. It was longer than we expected, not the 1.5 mile roundtrip that we thought the ranger had told us. We were exhilarated, thirsty, and hungry by the time we returned and truly enjoyed a meal at the cafe at Big Meadows.

Six Lives: The Stories of Henry VIII’s Queens

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

The purpose of our trek to Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham in the southwest of London was to see a recently recovered bronze bust of the Emperor Caligula but we discovered so much more in the recently restored 18th Century “little Gothic castle” built by Horace Walpole.
