Murals New and Old

2017 New England, Ohio, Road Trip

East Fork State Park outside of Cincinnati was a great home for us for four nights. Close enough to meet up with some cousins, near a restaurant we love because they serve some great goetta, but quiet and peaceful. It’s been quite a while since we stayed at this park and this time we fell in love. To make it sweeter, if we join Passport America, we can get a significant discount on weeknight stays here and all Ohio state parks! Now we’re on the move again. First stop was Sugarcreek to drop something off and a quick visit with a couple of people. Along the way we decided not to head right away into Pennsylvania but rather linger a little on Ohio’s Lake Erie shore. Seen on our way were two intriguing murals. The first one in Williamsburg seems to be of modern vintage. The second in Fresno is a carefully preserved bit of roadside Americana! The joys of off interstate travel!

Six Lives: The Stories of Henry VIII’s Queens

London’s National Portrait Gallery’s temporary exhibition, “Six Lives: The Stories of Henry VIII’s Queens” presents an amazing collection of portraits, jewelry, personal effects, books, costumes, and more to illustrate not only the lives of the six women who married the second Tudor king, but the effort across five centuries to keep their memory alive.

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

The purpose of our trek to Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham in the southwest of London was to see a recently recovered bronze bust of the Emperor Caligula but we discovered so much more in the recently restored 18th Century “little Gothic castle” built by Horace Walpole.
