Pork and Sauerkraut

Family

In accordance with longstanding German tradition we eat Pork and Sauerkraut on New Year’s Day in the hope that the upcoming year will bring goodness. The two of us are quite happy to see 2017 behind us. It’s not that we didn’t experience goodness in the year just past but that it was peppered with loss in our circle of family and friends. That’s what led to our lack of blog posts in recent months. We are currently ensconced in our mountain house working hard on a family history project and a bit of textile arts. It good to be indoors since all the horizontal surfaces outside are encased in ice and temperatures are expected to dip into single digits tonight. We may yet post about some of the adventures we had in the last months of 2017.

London’s National Portrait Gallery’s temporary exhibition, “Six Lives: The Stories of Henry VIII’s Queens” presents an amazing collection of portraits, jewelry, personal effects, books, costumes, and more to illustrate not only the lives of the six women who married the second Tudor king, but the effort across five centuries to keep their memory alive.

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

The purpose of our trek to Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham in the southwest of London was to see a recently recovered bronze bust of the Emperor Caligula but we discovered so much more in the recently restored 18th Century “little Gothic castle” built by Horace Walpole.
