Pipestem Resort State Park

Road Trip, States, West Virginia

After an overnight at Coshocton KOA we headed south. So many times we have driven the West Virginia Turnpike between Princeton and Parkersburg and seen a sign for Pipestem Resort State Park. So many times we’ve commented that some day we need go there. Today’s the day for our first foray. It’s just a one night stay but it’s giving us the message that we’ll want to return. We checked out the Bluestone Dining Room for dinner and had a wonderful view then we perused the hallway portrait gallery of national notables who hail from near here including but not limited to the Rocket Boy, Homer Hickham, Olympic Gold Medalist Mary Lou Retton, Recording artist, Bill Withers, TV Star, Don Knotts, and many many more. We’ll hang out on a pleasant evening in the campground and move on tomorrow but now we know this is a great place for hiking and biking as well as just relaxing.

London’s National Portrait Gallery’s temporary exhibition, “Six Lives: The Stories of Henry VIII’s Queens” presents an amazing collection of portraits, jewelry, personal effects, books, costumes, and more to illustrate not only the lives of the six women who married the second Tudor king, but the effort across five centuries to keep their memory alive.

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

The purpose of our trek to Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham in the southwest of London was to see a recently recovered bronze bust of the Emperor Caligula but we discovered so much more in the recently restored 18th Century “little Gothic castle” built by Horace Walpole.
