Driving the M6

Family, International, Ireland

It’s our fourth day in Ireland and our first drive on one of the Motorway highways, designated by the prefix M. We’ve traveled national (N) and regional (R) highways as well as local (L) roads. It’s a cooperative effort. Alice is our driver and is getting more accustomed to keeping to the left under the watchful eye of Lou. Karen is navigator with the assistance of Apple Maps and the hotspot we got with the rental car. And Patti has carefully watched to be certain we comply with speed limits. We’re getting used to roundabouts and definitely appreciate them when it comes to making a right turn! The Motorway offers a nice change from the narrow roads bordered by stone walls but like the US Interstate system the scenery tends to be rather bland. Nonetheless it’s getting us to one our much anticipated spots quickly!

Imperial War Museum

Imperial War Museum

London’s Imperial War Museum in Southwark founded even as the First World War raged offers insights into the myriad costs of the wars of the 20th and 21st Centuries. It was a most disquieting but valuable reminder of the myriad costs of war.

London’s Canals

London’s Canals

The two of us have long been fascinated with the history of canals and their role in the history of transportation, industrialization, and more recently recreation. This stay in London has given us new opportunities to explore and learn more about how canals contributed to the growth of this great city and how they are being used and preserved today.

National Portrait Gallery

National Portrait Gallery

It was a most educational visit to the newly renovated National Portrait Gallery at Trafalgar Square in Central London. We were intrigued with the contemporary approach to presenting British History.
