As we pulled out of Sioux Falls we were looking to find someplace interesting that we’d not seen before when we spotted an intriguing Brown Sign. Soon we were headed 56 miles north to DeSmet, South Dakota, Laura Ingalls Wilders’ Little Town on the Prairie. The town where Laura grew to maturity, met and married Almanzo. As guests of the Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society we toured four buildings significant to the family that populated the Little House books, the Surveyors’ House, the First School, the Brewster’s School, and the home that Charles “Pa” Ingalls built for his wife Caroline and their daughters. It’s not only the story of a family but of the pioneer spirit that spread across the plains!

Our home this evening is Site 66 on the shore of Lake Thompson, South Dakota’s largest natural lake. On this warm evening we’re wishing we’d chosen one of the lakefront sites where the breeze makes the flies scarce.

Burgh House Hampstead

Burgh House Hampstead

Off the beaten path is Hampstead is the more than three hundred year old Burgh House with a fascinating history. It’s now a community center, local museum, gallery, concert venue, event space, and more open to the public four days a week. We popped over for a bite to eat and to peruse the galleries to learn a little more about Hampstead history.
