Along Thunder Creek Trail we paused for a couple of moments to chat with a fellow hiker and learned that there is a nightly light show at Ladder Creek Falls next to the Gorge Power Station at Newhalem. We confirmed that and got additional details at the general store. So after dark we parked near the powerhouse, crossed the footbridge over the river, and climbed the stone steps near the falls pausing frequently to take in the beauty and watch the lights changing color as the water danced over the rocks. Originally installed in the 1920’s and 30’s as part of a garden, the light show was designed to educate the public as to possible uses of electricity. As the equipment aged, the show went dark for several years then in recent years with upgrades to modern, energy efficient LED lighting, the show will go on!
Burgh House Hampstead
Off the beaten path is Hampstead is the more than three hundred year old Burgh House with a fascinating history. It’s now a community center, local museum, gallery, concert venue, event space, and more open to the public four days a week. We popped over for a bite to eat and to peruse the galleries to learn a little more about Hampstead history.
