VKR Appreciation Weekend

2018 West, Road Trip, Washington

If memory serves us correctly, it was September 2008 at the Badlands KOA that we purchased our Value Kard Rewards membership. It’s served us well. We appreciate the 10% discount we get with every stay. There are other perks too, one is the VKR Appreciation Weekend every September and for the first time we’re a part of it. Stay Friday night, get Saturday night free. We’ve enjoyed our stay at the Winthrop KOA in Washington State as guests of the Meyer’s family who established this campground in 1973, the year after the completion of Highway 20 creating the Cascades Loop Highway and just eleven years after the very first KOA opened in Billings MT and the same year we two camped together at a KOA in Amarillo TX! Some things change. We now search for KOAs on their app instead of the print directory. Most campers arrive in big rigs instead of with tents. And some things never change. KOA ‘s commitment to quality and friendly hospitality. This morning our hostess Laurie finally had the chance to tour our T@B, something she’d wanted to do on Friday and she and her brother Mike regaled us with stories of their memories of family camping and that led to their parents’s decision to establish this KOA. We appreciated the fact that they have kept the iconic teepee shaped office and the classic KOA restrooms/showers even while installing state of art shower rooms and a lovely laundry room with a gorgeous flower garden all around.

Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Over a long weekend we sampled some of the myriad things to do in Cuyahoga Valley National Park, unique among national parks for it’s environmental reclamation, historic preservation, and recreational opportunities adjacent to the populous cities of Cleveland and Akron in northeastern Ohio. Can’t wait to return and explore more.

Slow Journey Home

Slow Journey Home

Our journey from Portsmouth, England to our home in Ohio might have been accomplished in about sixteen hours but my avoiding air travel we were able to enjoy a fifteen day journey home via train, ship, Uber, train, as well as our own feet and finally our personal vehicle.

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard

It’s been a fascinating two day visit to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. We managed to pack in tours of the HMS Warrior, the HMS Victory as well ast Victory Live: The
Big Repair, and finally the Mary Rose. All were incredibly informative and well presented.
