Two Nights in Reno

2018 West, Nevada, Road Trip

Our choice of the KOA in Reno, Nevada was at least in part driven by nostalgia. We’ve stayed here twice before, on our Honeymoon and again ten years ago on our 35 Anniversary trip. Both previous times we stayed here in a tent, something that’s since been outlawed by the county. Other things have changed too. Slot machines are no longer present in the campground store but you can call the casino next door for a complimentary ride. There’s a bunch of shopping and dining within walking distance though we didn’t bother. This campground is not much more than a huge parking lot crowded with big rigs but we scored a back-in site, K42, on the periphery with a great view of the Truckee River out our Stargazer window. It’s been a nice opportunity to get laundry done, take leisurely showers, sort through our mail, make some phone calls, and run into the REI in town to exchange the shoes Steve purchased in Bend last week. We had the opportunity to test our tank heaters while connected to shore power. But mostly it’s been a comfortable pause in the touring/exploring. It’s with a little bit of reluctance that we move on for where else will we ever find a site where we can watch freight trains in the valley traveling through the night from our bedroom window?

Wicked The Musical

Ever since its debut on Broadway the two of us have wanted to see “Wicked the Musical”. Today we realized that dream. In the Apollo Victoria Theater in London’s West End we were witness to the incredible prequel to The Wizard of Oz, the story of the Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.

Six Lives: The Stories of Henry VIII’s Queens

London’s National Portrait Gallery’s temporary exhibition, “Six Lives: The Stories of Henry VIII’s Queens” presents an amazing collection of portraits, jewelry, personal effects, books, costumes, and more to illustrate not only the lives of the six women who married the second Tudor king, but the effort across five centuries to keep their memory alive.

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

The purpose of our trek to Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham in the southwest of London was to see a recently recovered bronze bust of the Emperor Caligula but we discovered so much more in the recently restored 18th Century “little Gothic castle” built by Horace Walpole.
