Buena Vista Social Club

Family

We’ve been looking forward to another cultural experience that Arleene lined up for us as a group. Again we rode together in a caravan of classic American cars. This time our transport was a 1957 Chevrolet retrofitted with a Toyota diesel engine, transmission, and air conditioner. It definitely didn’t sound like an American muscle car! Our route took us along the waterfront and west to the Hotel Habana Riviera and the Legendarios del Guarjirito, a nightclub show celebrating Cuban culture of the 1950’s! Among the performers were three original members of the Buena Vista Social Club! It was definitely a memorable experience capped off by some audience participation that had us dancing up on stage! On the way back to our ship we learned that on Saturday nights the people of Havana gather along the seafront promenade to socialize. There seemed to thousands of them shoulder to shoulder three and four deep for a couple of miles along the sidewalk next to the seawall!

In the Apollo Victoria Theater in London’s West End we were witness to the incredible prequel to The Wizard of Oz, the story of the Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.

Six Lives: The Stories of Henry VIII’s Queens

London’s National Portrait Gallery’s temporary exhibition, “Six Lives: The Stories of Henry VIII’s Queens” presents an amazing collection of portraits, jewelry, personal effects, books, costumes, and more to illustrate not only the lives of the six women who married the second Tudor king, but the effort across five centuries to keep their memory alive.

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

The purpose of our trek to Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham in the southwest of London was to see a recently recovered bronze bust of the Emperor Caligula but we discovered so much more in the recently restored 18th Century “little Gothic castle” built by Horace Walpole.
