At the Library

Family

Jackson County Public Library is hosting a four lecture series entitled “Asian Philosophy in the Public Square” by Michelle Sorenson, a professor at nearby Western Carolina University. The two of us are fans of public libraries but have to admit we’ve not taken nearly enough advantage of our local gem. But a chance encounter with the library’s Director of Adult Services recently led us to explore this educational opportunity. Unfortunately we were not adequately prepared for the academic level at which it was presented. Although we may skip the rest of the series, we will be on the lookout for similar opportunities at our delightful library in the old courthouse!

London’s National Portrait Gallery’s temporary exhibition, “Six Lives: The Stories of Henry VIII’s Queens” presents an amazing collection of portraits, jewelry, personal effects, books, costumes, and more to illustrate not only the lives of the six women who married the second Tudor king, but the effort across five centuries to keep their memory alive.

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

The purpose of our trek to Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham in the southwest of London was to see a recently recovered bronze bust of the Emperor Caligula but we discovered so much more in the recently restored 18th Century “little Gothic castle” built by Horace Walpole.
