Although the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore wasn’t really on our radar, when we spotted it on the map the other day we quickly decided to include it in our whirlwind tour of Superior’s southern shore. To get our bearings we headed to the Visitor Center in Bayfield and watched a video that touched on some of the natural and social history of the islands. Browsing though the displays we were fascinated with some of the lighthouse equipment and history. We love getting up close and personal with a 3rd Order Fresnel lens, doesn’t everyone? Then we chatted with a ranger and learned that the season hasn’t even started yet. It begins in two days, on the Friday before the Fourth of July. There are a few boat tours right now but when we drove down to the ticket office on the waterfront we learned that tomorrow morning’s tour is sold out. Nonetheless we’ve learned a bit about the park, have plans for a hike tomorrow, and an appetite to return and explore more.

Six Lives: The Stories of Henry VIII’s Queens

London’s National Portrait Gallery’s temporary exhibition, “Six Lives: The Stories of Henry VIII’s Queens” presents an amazing collection of portraits, jewelry, personal effects, books, costumes, and more to illustrate not only the lives of the six women who married the second Tudor king, but the effort across five centuries to keep their memory alive.

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

The purpose of our trek to Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham in the southwest of London was to see a recently recovered bronze bust of the Emperor Caligula but we discovered so much more in the recently restored 18th Century “little Gothic castle” built by Horace Walpole.
