A Taste of DesMoines

2019 West Again, Iowa, Road Trip, States

Apparently an incredible experience like a Fourth of July Parade in Slater isn’t enough. Pam and Mike set out to show us more of the delights of central Iowa starting with a stop at Double Dipped in Huxley for ice cream or coffee or both in the form of an affogato, vanilla ice cream “drowned” in expresso and in Mike’s case topped with chocolate syrup. Then a trip to the Saylorville Lake Visitors Center and the spillway with an impressive flow of water. Then a stop overlooking Camp Dodge and a chance to marvel at and climb on some vintage military equipment. Eventually we all felt the need for refreshment and made the trip into DesMoines and the High Life Lounge described by our hosts as a 1970’s dive bar. As promised the Bacon Wrapped Tater Tots are divine. You can’t go wrong with the Broasted Chicken nor the Brisket Poutine and any number of brews on tap. We will admit even with coming a little early for dinner on a summer holiday that with the crowds, the service staff was stretched thin, but we truly enjoyed this taste of DesMoines.

In the Apollo Victoria Theater in London’s West End we were witness to the incredible prequel to The Wizard of Oz, the story of the Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.

Six Lives: The Stories of Henry VIII’s Queens

London’s National Portrait Gallery’s temporary exhibition, “Six Lives: The Stories of Henry VIII’s Queens” presents an amazing collection of portraits, jewelry, personal effects, books, costumes, and more to illustrate not only the lives of the six women who married the second Tudor king, but the effort across five centuries to keep their memory alive.

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

The purpose of our trek to Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham in the southwest of London was to see a recently recovered bronze bust of the Emperor Caligula but we discovered so much more in the recently restored 18th Century “little Gothic castle” built by Horace Walpole.
