Leaving Silt, Colorado, we set our GPS to take us to Vernal, Utah. At the town of Rifle Apple Maps routed us north on CO-13, then west on CO-64, fine highways through some beautiful country. The glitch came just east of Rangely, Colorado when the GPS chose to save us five miles by routing us north on County Road 65. Despite a premonition that this might not be a good idea, we made the decision to embark on what turned out to be a Siri fueled adventure. Signs at the turnoff advised us that we were entering Open Range and that the Blue Mountain Energy Mine was located here. For a while all was well. The road was paved and traveling was smooth. We could see a coal mining operation in the distance. We drove under a conveyor bridge, over railroad tracks, under power transmission lines. And then the pavement ended. We kept going. Hoping for the best. We crossed the border into Utah. The road name changed to County Road 61. Then about ten miles after the adventure began, we emerged onto US-40. With nerves a bit ragged but otherwise no worse for the wear, we continued our otherwise uneventful journey to the Vernal KOA and a Half Baked treat. Although the slightly longer drive along CO-64 into Dinosaur, Utah would have been much easier, it certainly wouldn’t have been so exciting!
those unexpected gps adventures…I had one today coming from Medora ND to rapid city. Sturgis isn’t just n Sturgus. GPS said it would save me 15 min. Took me down a dirt road right by the Buffalo Clip which is the music venue! Huge field with stages & thousands of bikers. In addition there were many more coming. Lucky for me, I was going n the opposite direction. So glad I took the advice of the GPS!! safe travels y’all!!!
