Iron Horse Number 55

2019 West Again, Nevada, Road Trip, States

Our chosen route to California is taking us along I-80 to Reno. Although the idea of traveling US-50, the Loneliest Road in America is intriguing, an analysis of the frequency of gas stations compared to the distance we can travel between fill ups convinced us that we’d not be comfortable making the trek along that route. Instead we’re in Elko, Nevada tonight. It was a comfort knowing that we had made a reservation online at the Iron Horse RV Resort, especially since this is a weekend night in July. When we arrived we were pleased to learn that our Site 55 not only was a back in but that we had the privacy of a wall behind and a tree to look at through our stargazer window. Although we didn’t take advantage of it, all the amenities of the Hilton Garden Inn are available to those staying at the RV resort. At check in we learned that most people come here to gamble but that the California Trails Interpretive Center is just west of us. Guess where we’re going tomorrow!

Six Lives: The Stories of Henry VIII’s Queens

London’s National Portrait Gallery’s temporary exhibition, “Six Lives: The Stories of Henry VIII’s Queens” presents an amazing collection of portraits, jewelry, personal effects, books, costumes, and more to illustrate not only the lives of the six women who married the second Tudor king, but the effort across five centuries to keep their memory alive.

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

The purpose of our trek to Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham in the southwest of London was to see a recently recovered bronze bust of the Emperor Caligula but we discovered so much more in the recently restored 18th Century “little Gothic castle” built by Horace Walpole.
