Today’s route is US-20 eastbound across New York State. It’s one of our favorite highways. Our first trip along this stretch was in September 1976 driving a 1971 Pontiac LeMans from Niagara Falls, Ontario to Glens Falls, New York. If memory serves us correctly we opted not to get the AAA Trip-Tik that time but relied on AAA state maps to guide our route and Mobil as well as AAA Travel Guides to find lodging, restaurants, and points of interest. We listened to music on an AM radio, carried a picnic basket and stopped at roadside tables, wrote postcards, stopped occasionally to use a phone booth to call collect to let family know where we were. We were enchanted with the rolling landscape and the glimpses we got of the New York Finger Lakes. In contrast these days with Bell@ and her Teardrop predecessors, we carry our own lodging behind us, make most of our meals in our own kitchen, rely on our electronic devices for routing, music streaming, blogging, news and entertainment, staying in touch with a much expanded network of family and friends, and making reservations for places to stay. We relish the fact that we don’t have to worry so much about making good time but can enjoy the opportunity to linger a bit, stop earlier in the day, and just enjoy the journey.
Burgh House Hampstead
Off the beaten path is Hampstead is the more than three hundred year old Burgh House with a fascinating history. It’s now a community center, local museum, gallery, concert venue, event space, and more open to the public four days a week. We popped over for a bite to eat and to peruse the galleries to learn a little more about Hampstead history.
