Thomson to Oakdale

2021, Illinois, Road Trip, States, Wisconsin

This trip we’ve slowed down considerably. In general we’re looking to drive less than three hours between stops and generally stay for three or four days. Today’s the first day of a transition. We’re leaving Thomson Causeway Campground, an Army COE site on an island in the Mississippi near Thomson IL after a three night stay. Since we are approaching a weekend and had no campground reservations, we opted to request stays at two Harvest Hosts sites on our way to the Apostle Islands. But first we needed to do laundry and service our water tanks (empty waste and fill fresh). Thus we chose a KOA campground with full hookups for a single night stay. This four hour journey today is the longest stretch of our four day trek to the Apostle Islands on the southern shore of Lake Superior but our route along US, state, and county highways is not only the most direct, but it’s a quite pleasant drive to Oakdale KOA Journey near Tomah, WI. Along the way we stopped in a parking lot to prepare a quick breakfast. Just a little further up the road we stopped at Country House Grocery in Scales Mound, IL. What a treat! We were looking to refill our coffee mugs but found an honest to goodness down home grocery store complete with butcher counter and friendly staff! Now we’ll be able to saute veggies to accompany the bison steak we’re planning for tonight’s dinner.

Wicked The Musical

Wicked The Musical

Ever since its debut on Broadway the two of us have wanted to see “Wicked the Musical”. Today we realized that dream. In the Apollo Victoria Theater in London’s West End we were witness to the incredible prequel to The Wizard of Oz, the story of the Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.

Six Lives: The Stories of Henry VIII’s Queens

London’s National Portrait Gallery’s temporary exhibition, “Six Lives: The Stories of Henry VIII’s Queens” presents an amazing collection of portraits, jewelry, personal effects, books, costumes, and more to illustrate not only the lives of the six women who married the second Tudor king, but the effort across five centuries to keep their memory alive.

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

Caligula at Strawberry Hill

The purpose of our trek to Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham in the southwest of London was to see a recently recovered bronze bust of the Emperor Caligula but we discovered so much more in the recently restored 18th Century “little Gothic castle” built by Horace Walpole.
