Aboard Jewel of the Seas

2024, International, Netherlands

This is to be our home for the next twenty-seven days as we embark upon back to back cruises on Royal Caribbean’s Jewel of the Seas out of Amsterdam, Netherlands. From our hotel in Haarlem we trekked with luggage to Haarlem Centraal and purchased train tickets at the electronic kiosk and opted for first class tickets for this journey. Our seats were roomy enough to allow us to keep our bags at our feet rather than hefting them into overhead and retrieving them just about fifteen minutes later. We arrived in plenty of time, and headed east along the river IJ toward the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam, an easy walk especially if you know to look for the ramp rather than the stairs! The boarding process was quick and easy and soon we were settled in our cabin we were looking for eats in the Windjammer Cafe on Deck 11. We sailed on this same ship back in March of last year and had in fact booked this cruise while on that sailing so we’re returning to a familiar place in another part of the world. She’s just out of dry dock in Brest, France so we’re curious as to what’s new and what features do we remember from last time? We did recall enjoying the view from the Vortex Lounge on Deck 13 so that’s where we headed to enjoy our sail away cocktails and watch the scenery and the swans as we sailed west along the river IJ and through the ‎⁨Noordzee Kanaal⁩ lock. Ahead of us are adventures in Scotland, Iceland, Ireland and after a return to Amsterdam, more adventures in Norway! It will feel good to have the familiarity of the cruise ship as we explore new places and make new friends! Loving this adventure!

Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Over a long weekend we sampled some of the myriad things to do in Cuyahoga Valley National Park, unique among national parks for it’s environmental reclamation, historic preservation, and recreational opportunities adjacent to the populous cities of Cleveland and Akron in northeastern Ohio. Can’t wait to return and explore more.

Slow Journey Home

Slow Journey Home

Our journey from Portsmouth, England to our home in Ohio might have been accomplished in about sixteen hours but my avoiding air travel we were able to enjoy a fifteen day journey home via train, ship, Uber, train, as well as our own feet and finally our personal vehicle.

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard

It’s been a fascinating two day visit to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. We managed to pack in tours of the HMS Warrior, the HMS Victory as well ast Victory Live: The
Big Repair, and finally the Mary Rose. All were incredibly informative and well presented.
